Farm Day in the City

Farm Day in the City has been sponsored by the Kern County Farm Bureau since 1984. Over the years, this event has grown from being held at one school with a handful of children to an attendance of more than 3,500 children at the Kern County Fairgrounds. The goal of the event is to acquaint children with agriculture and its importance in our community and state.

Children in grades 2nd, 3rd and 4th are invited from both private and public schools in Kern County. There is no cost to the schools and the entire program is funded through sponsorships and the Kern County Farm Bureau.

Each year, the Farm Bureau tries to improve this event which has become the largest continuous student-oriented county farm bureau program in the State of California. Farm Day in the City would not be possible if it were not for our exhibitors, contributors and volunteers.

Students in attendance will experience exhibits including farm machinery, livestock, and various commodities, as well as demonstrations on ag-specific issues of water, and safety use. Exhibitors are comprised of local farmers and ranchers, agri-business representatives, and high school FFA students who have a passion for agriculture education. The students are given the opportunity to experience outdoor demonstrations with a variety of livestock as well as an array of indoor exhibits that provide games, activities, and giveaways.

We are continuously striving to enhance this program to provide a better educational experience for all students in Kern County. Our goal is for students to leave Farm Day in the City with a better understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from.
